William Lygon (20 February 1872 – 14 November 1938), known as Viscount Elmsley until 1891 and as 7th Earl Beauchamp thereafter, was a Liberal Party politician.
In October 1897 he was chosen by the Progressive Party to be a candidate in the upcoming elections to the London School Board to contest the Finsbury Division.[1] He was elected, but resigned his seat on 18 March 1899 when he was appointed Governor of New South Wales.
He returned to England in 1901, and became an active Liberal member of the House of Lords. He held a number of minor government posts and was made a privy councillor and for some years was the Liberal leader in the Lords.
From 1929-31 he was Chancellor of the University of London.[2]
