The station opened as South Woodford (George Lane) on the 22 August 1856 on the Eastern Counties Railways which makes it one of the oldest stations operated on the network. After various reassignments it was transferred to the Central Line on 14 December 1947.
There is no full Step-Free Access available at the station. With only one platform having access from train|platforms to street level.
