Chairman London County Council 1944 – 1945. MP for Reading 1923-4 and 1929–31, and Barking 1945-59. 1932-46 London County Council member for Mile End. 1946-64 Alderman, continuing to serve on various committees.

Founder President of Socialist Medical Association. Promoted a national health service. Various publications and numerous medical and surgical papers; and on alpine plants.
