The Metropolitan Borough of Stepney was a metropolitan borough in the County of London, which was located in East London and was in existence from 1900 to 1965.

History[]

The Stepney Reconstruction Group was an unofficial group led by Dr. J.J. Mallon at Toynbee Hall that through the early years of the 1940s, had been studying the causes of bad living conditions in Metropolitan Borough of Stepney. In 1943, they held an exhibition titled Stepney Today and Tomorrow at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. A 1945 written report, called Living in Stepney, was an attempt to summarise the past, present and possible future of Stepney.[1]
