Henry Snell

Born 1 April 1865, died 21 April 1944.
Chairman London County Council 1934 – 1938.

Self-educated working class. Joined Social Democratic Federation and political activism: associates included Henry Hyndman, Tom Mann, Eleanor Marx and Ben Tillett. Supported Bryant and May match factory strike and 1889 London Dock Strike. Joined ILP and Fabian Society 1894. British Ethical Society involvement becoming President. 1919-24 member LCC, MP Woolwich East (Will Crooks’ seat) 1922-31; being raised to peerage. 1929 on Shaw Commission.. Involved in British Institute of Parliamentary Affairs and Empire Parliamentary Association; on British Council, becoming Vie –Chairman. 1935 became Labour Leader in the Lords.
Member of the LCC 1919-25; and MP from 1922
