London East was a constituency that elected a single Member of the European Parliament (MEP). It was created in 1979 and abolished in 1999 when it was replaced by the multi-member London constituency.

The European constituency was formed by the grouping of nine parliamentary constituencies used for the elections of members of the UK House of Commons: Barking, Dagenham, Hornchurch, Ilford North, Ilford South, Newham North East, Romford, Upminster and Wanstead and Woodford.[1] The same boundaries were used in 1984, 1989 and 1994.[2] [3]

The seat was won by Alan Tyrrell of the Conservative Party at the first election in 1979. In 1984 Tyrell lost the seat to Carole Tongue, of the Labour Party. Tongue held the seat until its abolition in 1999.
