Douglas Eden (born 5 March 1939) is an American-born academic and former local politician.
Born in New York, he came to the United Kingdom to undertake his Masters Degree at the University of London in 1960. Following his graduation he served a two year term in the United States Army before returning to the UK.
He has held various teaching posts at the University of London, Middlesex University, the Institute of European Studies and a number of Transatlantic bodies.
In 1973 he was elected to the Greater London Council as a Labour Party councillor representing Feltham and Heston. Eden was on the right of the Labour Party and in 1975 became secretary of the Social Democratic Alliance (SDA). Although most of the members of the SDA continued within the Labour Party until 1980/81, Eden was expelled in 1976 and served out his term on the GLC as an Independent until 1977.
A founding member of the Social Democratic Party, at the Greater London Council election, 1981 he stood as SDP candidate at Islington South and Finsbury, finishing in third place.
He stood for election as as an SDP candidate on two more occasions: European Parliament Elections in 1984 at South Yorkshire and the 1987 General Election at Hornsey and Wood Green.
He was appointed Chairman of the Heathrow Airport Consultative Committee in June 1973 and held the post for more than twenty-four years, retiring in August 1997.[1]
