Alida Gwendolen Rosemary Harvie (née Brittain) (1910 - 19 October 2007)

The daughter of Sir Harry Brittain (Wikipedia page [1]) journalist and sometime MP for Acton. She worked as a writer, an educationalist, a journalist and a lecturer.

In 1938, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, she joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry as a volunteer ambulance driver. By the end of the war she had risen through the ranks from private to major in the Army Education Corps.

A "true blue" member of the Conservative Party, in 1949 she was elected to the London County Council as a councillor representing Camberwelll, Dulwich. In October 1950 she married Major John Harvie, and stood down from the council at the next election in 1952.
